Chapter Twenty-Three

He landed feet first and sunk like a rock. Down, down, down he went, all the while kicking and fighting to reverse his plunge. Finally, his momentum slowed, and then stopped; and, lungs bursting for want of air, he started rising again. He knew somewhere in his pack he had an enchanted ring that would aid him at the moment. But the right time to fish it out would have been before jumping, not now. So Jack swam for the surface as fast as his arms and legs could take him, and rose, gasping and gulping down air.

Migli’s voice reached him, singing some new song.

They called to the goblins at the oar,

‘O What have you done with our brethren on the shore?’

“We laid them abord on the starboard side,

And we threw them into the sea so wide.”

He promptly had to head back down, though, because he’d come up in the same vicinity that he’d gone down; and the goblins were waiting for him. He took three shots, two glancing arrows that whittled off a few hit points each time, and one devastating blow to the sternum that halved his health.

Still, he could swim, and he did. With his lungs full of fresh air, he swam under the nearest goblin ship and popped up on the other side. A messy hand had scrawled Lady Death on the side of the ship in bloodred paint.

The crew of Lady Death were still looking for him, but their attention remained fixed on his former location: the other side of the ship. He hugged the hull, and tried to angle himself to get a view of what was going on onboard.

Migli went on singing, his voice rolling across the waves like thunder.

So we laid them aboard on the larboard side,

And we threw them into the sea so wide.

Lordy, but it grieved our hearts full sore

To see the drowned goblin men float along the shore!

Jack’s effort to take stock of his surroundings met with mixed results. He’d come up on the far side of the line of ships, right alongside the Lady Death. He couldn’t see much of what was happening above, due to the angle of the hull blocking his line of sight. But he could hear screams and smell fumes near at hand, and he could see billowing black smoke floating over the ship. He could also feel the water as the ship cut through it. They moved slowly now, almost leisurely – like the pirate ships he’d already sabotaged.

He smiled at that, but he knew he couldn’t stop there. No, his work had just begun.

He decided to see what other damage a little fire could deal. So he kicked with his legs to keep his hands above water, and dumped a barrage of firebolts into the upper portion of the hull.

It crackled and fizzled and smoked, but seemed unwilling to do more. Jack almost gave up. He could hear goblins nearby, their feet tramping heavily as they asked in their awful, scratchy voices, “What’s that?”

“You hear something?”

“Oi, keep alert.
